Community Inventor Spotlight: Melon (M. Ellen) Dash (@Melon)

This week’s community Inventor Spotlight features a true pioneer in water safety and adult swim education: Melon Dash, known in the Inventor Smart Community as @Melon.

Based in Sarasota, Florida, Melon has dedicated over 40 years to helping afraid adults overcome their fear of water—a mission that has touched the lives of over 6,000 students through her specialized swim school.

Melon is the holder of two U.S. patents (#11,331,554 and #11,872,459) for a remarkable invention: a swim-training “gizmo” that gives afraid adults a secure, in-water station to safely test floating and gradually build confidence. It eliminates the fear of drifting or sinking—allowing adults to learn without taking risks or feeling out of control.

While Melon has already sold a few units and used the device successfully for the past four years, she’s now looking for licensees to help bring this life-changing product to scale. She’s not interested in spending her time building units in a garage—she wants this invention to reach the millions of adults who are still afraid in water and save lives in the process.

Melon is also the author of two books in her field, and she reminds us that real innovation isn’t always about new gadgets—it’s about solving problems others have overlooked for decades.

📅 Monday, May 19

Today we celebrate the birthday of Frank Luke Jr. (1897–1918)—a daring American pilot and World War I hero who, while not a traditional inventor, embodied the fearless spirit of innovation in action.

Known as the “Arizona Balloon Buster,” Luke pushed the limits of early aviation technology, taking down 14 enemy observation balloons and four aircraft in just under three weeks. His bold tactics and unconventional maneuvers helped shape combat aviation strategy for generations to come.

✈️ Luke’s legacy reminds us that invention isn’t always about what you build—it’s about how you think, adapt, and take bold risks when it matters most.
