🎙️ Coming This Week: Inventor Spotlight Ep. 17 – Dr. Turner Osler

Premieres Friday, August 8 at 11:00 AM ET
📺 Watch on YouTube »

This week’s Inventor Spotlight features Dr. Turner Osler — a former trauma surgeon and research epidemiologist who left the operating room to rethink… how we sit.

Hosted by Samantha St. Raymond, this episode dives into two inventions born from Dr. Osler’s medical background:

  • The Button Chair – A free, DIY “tippy” chair designed to help students stay focused and physically engaged in the classroom

  • The Foot Wave – A simple under-desk tool that keeps adults in motion while seated, improving posture and metabolism

It’s a powerful look at innovation driven by public health — and how one inventor is making active sitting more accessible for students, teachers, and workplaces everywhere.

Set a reminder, grab your seat (maybe a tippy one), and tune in for the premiere.

💡 Inventor Tip of the Week — Know When to Say “Patent Pending”

Filing a provisional patent application gives you the right to legally mark your invention as Patent Pending for 12 months. That simple phrase does more than sound official—it creates a layer of protection while you test the market, pitch to companies, or seek investors.

But timing matters.

If you file too early, before you’ve clearly defined your invention or your market, you could waste your shot. If you wait too long, someone else might beat you to it.

📌 Pro Tip: Don’t file just because you're excited. File when your product is developed enough to explain, demonstrate, and potentially profit from.

🧠 Tip adapted from How to Make Money with Your Invention Idea by Brian Fried (Inventor Smart Publishing)

🎯 Action Step: If your invention is pitch-ready, consider filing a provisional patent to lock in your “Patent Pending” status. Just make sure your idea is clear enough to be understood, and valuable enough to protect.

🗓️ On This Day in Inventor History — August 5

The First Electric Traffic Signal
August 5, 1914 – The world’s first electric traffic signal system was installed in Cleveland, Ohio, at the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 105th Street.

Designed by inventor James Hoge, the system used red and green lights with a manual buzzer to help manage growing traffic and pedestrian flow—marking the birth of modern traffic control.

📜 U.S. Patent No. 1,251,666

This simple invention sparked a global shift in how cities move.
