David Klein is the legendary entrepreneur and innovator who created the Jelly Belly® jelly bean in 1976. A natural-born inventor with a sweet tooth and a sharp mind, David’s story is one of creativity, risk, reinvention, and resilience.

👤 About David Klein:

• Born in Syracuse, NY, raised in Los Angeles, CA

• Studied Economics at UCLA and earned a law degree from Southwestern Law School

• Launched his candy business, Garvey Nut & Candy, in 1976

• Created the original Jelly Belly® jelly bean and sold it from a rented corner inside Fosselman’s Ice Cream

• Has remained active as a candy creator, entrepreneur, mentor, and philanthropist

David’s journey has been featured on national shows including The Mike Douglas Show, Regis Philbin, and even a People Magazine cover story—complete with the now-iconic photo of him in a bathtub full of jelly beans.
