This week’s Sunday Inventor Spotlight shines on someone whose passion for people is as strong as her passion for creating solutions: Tammy Burkett, known in the Inventor Smart Community as @Tammybur54.
Tammy is a dedicated caregiver, housekeeper, and community advocate from Dalton, Georgia. For the past 26 years, she’s worked closely with elderly clients, gaining invaluable insight into the everyday challenges they face—particularly when it comes to safety and accessibility in their homes.
Her journey into invention came from a place of empathy and experience. Tammy doesn’t just see problems; she sees opportunities to make life better. With several ideas aimed at improving safety and ease for both elderly individuals and their caregivers, Tammy is already making waves as a strong advocate for meaningful change. While she’s still early in her inventor journey, her voice is powerful and her vision clear.
Tammy’s guiding motto is simple but impactful:
"Safety should always come in numbers and be the first priority over anything on a product being made and sold."
Whether it’s reporting potholes in her community or offering support to clients with dementia, Tammy leads with compassion, purpose, and a desire to make a difference. Her story reminds us that inventing isn’t always about high-tech gadgets—it’s about solving real, everyday problems for real people.

🗓 On This Day in Inventor History
📅 Monday, May 5 – Cinco de Mayo
While Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, it also offers us a moment to honor the incredible Mexican inventors and innovators who’ve shaped the world.
One such inventor is Guillermo González Camarena, a brilliant Mexican electrical engineer who developed an early color television transmission system in the 1940s. At just 23 years old, he patented his groundbreaking system, paving the way for the color broadcasts we now take for granted.
Camarena’s work teaches us that invention isn’t always about creating something completely new—it’s about improving the way we experience the world.
Today, as we celebrate Mexican heritage and pride, let’s raise a glass (or a prototype!) to all the inventors whose ideas bring more color, culture, and connection to our lives.
