Inventor Tip of the Week — Expand Your Window of Opportunity

When you think about your invention, don’t stop at its first use case. Ask yourself: How else could this be used? Who else could benefit?

Brian Fried shares how one of his inventions, originally designed just to keep bread fresh, became far more valuable when he realized it could also seal cereal bags, freezer veggies, chip bags, even extension cords. By broadening the application, the potential market (and sales) grew dramatically.

📌 Pro Tip: Take one of your current ideas and brainstorm at least three different audiences or uses beyond your original vision. Could your product help a niche group and a mass market? Could it be sold in specialty stores and big box retailers?

🎯 Action Step: This week, write down three new ways your invention could be used or marketed. Expanding your “window of opportunity” could be the difference between a niche product and a bestseller.

On This Day in Inventor History — Birth of Michael Faraday

On September 22, 1791, Michael Faraday was born in Newington, Surrey, England — a scientist whose work would forever transform how we understand electricity and magnetism.

Faraday invented (or discovered foundational laws for) things like electromagnetic induction, the electric motor, and electrolysis. These breakthroughs helped create the basic principles behind generators, motors, and almost every piece of electrical tech we use today.

He started with little formal education, working as a bookbinder’s apprentice, but his curiosity, obsession with experimentation, and courage to explore the unknown made him one of the most influential inventors in history.
