On This Day in Inventor History — August 18

• 1868 – Helium is discovered in the solar spectrum by French astronomer Jules Janssen during a total solar eclipse—marking the first-ever identification of a new element in the Sun's atmosphere .

• 1858 – William Austin Burt, American inventor, legislator, and surveyor, passes away on this day. Burt is celebrated for creating early calculating instruments and innovation in measurement tools .

• 1949 – Plant Patent No. 1 is officially granted to Henry Bosenberg for a climbing rose, marking the first-ever plant patent assignment in U.S. history—ushering in a new era of intellectual property protection for botanists and breeders .
