Community Spotlight: Herbert Bennett (@herbb9001)

This week, we’re turning the spotlight toward Herbert Bennett—a true visionary mind and longtime contributor to the Inventor Smart Community.

Based in Brooklyn, New York, Herb is an architect, author, DeSign scientist, and “artrepreneur” who blends creative innovation with a deep commitment to cultural evolution.

He’s not just building gadgets—he’s imagining a better future for all of us:

“What if we all became virtual inventors and creators of the next golden age—with cultural and scientific achievement ten times greater than all the golden ages in history?”

Herb’s posts call on inventors to think bigger—not just about what we make, but why we make it. From paradigm shifts to poetic philosophy, his contributions remind us that invention is both an outer and inner journey.

He also supports other inventors through funding connections—from seed investing to grants and crowdfunding—and brings a collaborative spirit to every conversation.

📌 Connect with Herb & follow his journey:

Inventor Tip of the Week — Name Your Invention Early

One of Brian Fried’s golden rules? “Give your invention a name—sooner than later.”

It might seem small, but naming your invention does three big things:

  • It makes it real. You’re not just talking about an idea anymore—you’re talking about a product.

  • It keeps you focused. A good name fuels your commitment and helps visualize packaging, pitch decks, and branding.

  • It opens up early research. You can check domain availability, run basic trademark searches, and even test reactions with friends and buyers.

🚀 Action step: Take five minutes today to brainstorm names. Aim for 3 strong options, then check domain availability on a site like GoDaddy and do a basic USPTO search.

Naming it doesn’t lock you in, but it gives your invention a new kind of power.

Tip adapted from Brian Fried’s books Inventing Secrets Revealed and How to Make Money with Your Invention Idea (Inventor Smart Publishing).

On This Day in Inventor History – Monday, July 7

The Patent That Helped the World Hear Clearly

July 7, 1874 – Alexander Graham Bell filed one of his earliest patents related to acoustic telegraphy, the foundational idea that would eventually lead to the invention of the telephone. While his more famous telephone patent would come two years later in 1876, this early filing marks a key milestone in the development of sound transmission technology.

Bell’s work wasn’t just about making a phone call—it was about solving a bigger problem: how to carry human voice over a wire. That challenge sparked innovations in vibration, conductivity, and amplification—principles that still shape audio and communications tech today.

Why it matters to modern inventors

Bell’s early filing shows how the road to a breakthrough often starts with testing pieces of the puzzle. His 1874 patent wasn’t “the phone,” but it proved a concept, made a case for ownership, and laid a foundation for collaboration, competition, and continued iteration.

So ask yourself:

🔍 Is there a piece of your invention you could isolate, test, and protect—even if it’s not the full product yet?
📞 How could your idea evolve into something bigger than you first imagined?

Innovation rarely arrives all at once. But documenting your early spark? That’s how legacies get started.
