Don't Let Your Million-Dollar Idea Walk Away
Did you know that 83% of Americans have a million-dollar invention idea, but a shocking 97% never act on it? This “execution gap” costs the U.S. economy an estimated $2.3 trillion annually.
But it doesn’t have to be this way! Brian Fried, “The Inventor Coach,” highlights that the key isn’t a lack of great ideas — it’s a lack of action and information.
The Two Proven Paths to Success
Brian Fried, a serial inventor with 15 patents, outlines two clear paths for turning your idea into a reality:
➡️ The Manufacturing Route: For those who want to build a business.
The Benefit: Direct control over your product and business.
The Challenge: Requires capital for manufacturing, marketing, and distribution.
The Modern Solution: Technology has lowered the barriers! You can now access 3D printing, micro-manufacturing networks, and e-commerce platforms that make it easier and more affordable than ever to produce and sell your product.
➡️ The Licensing Route: For those who want to focus on innovation.
The Benefit: Get paid ongoing royalty income without the stress of manufacturing or marketing.
The Challenge: Requires navigating complex agreements and finding the right company.
The Modern Solution: Licensing agents and virtual prototyping make it easier to pitch your idea to companies actively looking for external innovations.
The Secret to Success: Taking Action
Based on his analysis of over 16,000 inventors, Brian notes that the successful 3% share common traits:
They act fast: Take concrete steps within 60 days of getting an idea.
They validate: Test ideas with market research before spending a lot of money.
They connect: Seek out mentors and join communities for guidance.
They have a plan: Follow a systematic process that fits their goals and resources.
What to Do When Someone Is Interested in Your Invention
Someone has noticed your idea — whether it’s a company, a product scout, or a curious contact. That’s exciting, but how you respond now can make or break future opportunities. Brian Fried’s guide walks you through a clear, smart path forward. Here are some smart moves to take when someone shows interest in your invention:
Pause and Prepare: Don’t rush your response. Get organized with a simple one-pager and a short demo video. These materials should highlight the benefit of your invention clearly and concisely.
Use NDAs Strategically: No patent filed? Ask for an NDA before sharing details. Patent pending? You can lean on that status and share more openly. If they provide their own NDA, read it carefully and look for red flags.
Keep Your Pitch Simple: Lead with the benefit, not the backstory. Stick to visuals, mockups, or a quick demo — and aim to keep your presentation under 5 minutes. Let them ask for more if they’re interested.
Protect Yourself in Conversations: Only share what’s necessary at first. Be clear about your protection status, follow up each meeting with a summary email, and never feel pressured to sign anything on the spot.
Know What They’re Evaluating: They’re not just assessing your invention — they’re assessing you. Companies want to know if your product is market-ready, compelling to their audience, and whether you’re someone they can work with smoothly.
Mindset Matters: Don’t assume interest means a deal is done. Stay confident but humble, cautious but not fearful. Present value first and allow deal terms to unfold naturally.
Bottom line: Interest is only the first step. Your professionalism, preparation, and protection can turn that spark into a real opportunity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Licensing?
Licensing is a marketing and brand expansion tool that is used globally by everyone — from major corporations to the smallest of small businesses. Entertainment, sports, and fashion are some of the best-known areas of licensing, but the business also reaches into the worlds of corporate brands, art, publishing, colleges and universities, non-profit groups, and more.
Ultimately, brand licensing is a way of doing business that connects you with an ever-widening range of property types, product categories, territories, and demographics.
If you’re looking for the most basic definition, however, a license is an agreement through which a licensee leases the rights to a legally protected piece of intellectual property from a licensor (the entity which owns or represents the property) for use in conjunction with a product or service.

💬 Advice from an Inventor
“Entrepreneurship is like jumping out of a plane while building your parachute. You must stay laser focused, realize your decision is irreversible, and figure things out along the way. But when everything aligns, the feeling of seeing something from your brain manifest and change reality? Divine magic.”
🧠 Invention History: October 30, 1888 — John Loud Receives a Patent for the Ballpoint Pen
Before Hungarian journalist László Bíró revolutionized writing with his 1938 ballpoint design, the first patent for a ballpoint pen was filed in 1888 by John Loud, an American leather tanner. Loud’s design used a rolling ball to apply ink — perfect for marking leather, but too rough for paper.
Decades later, Bíró refined the idea with quick-drying ink and a smoother mechanism, paving the way for the ballpoint pens we know today. His version gained global recognition during World War II, when the British Royal Air Force adopted it for use at high altitudes.
From Loud’s 1888 patent to Bíró’s breakthrough, the ballpoint pen remains one of history’s most practical and widely used inventions.
