Are You an Inventor? Let’s Check Your Profile

Do you consider yourself an inventor or aspire to be one? Being an inventor means seeing the world differently—understanding how things work and envisioning improvements.

According to Merriam-Webster, an inventor is someone who “creates or produces something useful for the first time.” Successful inventors know that research is key to achieving their goals.

Evaluate Your Inventiveness:

Inventive Mind:

  • Do you come up with ideas and solutions daily?

  • Do you often think, “This could be done differently”?

  • Are you excited by challenges and see opportunities everywhere?

Inventive Habits:

  • Are you curious and ask questions about how things work?

  • Do you experiment and keep track of your ideas?

  • Do you enjoy brainstorming with others?

Preparation:

  • Have you researched your market and registered your patent?

  • Are you at the prototyping stage?

  • Have you surrounded yourself with a strong team?

Your Goals:

  • Do you want to solve problems and make a positive impact?

  • Are you driven by personal satisfaction and recognition?

  • Are you focused on achieving tangible rewards?

Reflect on these questions to see where you stand as an inventor!

How a Structured Innovation Process Creates Creative Ideas

Creative ideas with innovation potential for a company arise from clear structures. Why are the respective phases in the innovation process so important, and what role do innovation structure and innovation culture play?

The Structured Innovation Process is a systematic approach that helps organizations effectively develop and implement innovative ideas. It involves several key stages:

  • Idea Generation: Encourage creative thinking and gather diverse ideas from various sources.

  • Idea Evaluation: Assess ideas based on feasibility, potential impact, and alignment with business goals.

  • Concept Development: Transform selected ideas into detailed concepts, including prototypes and market strategies.

  • Testing: Validate concepts through experimentation and feedback to refine and improve them.

  • Implementation: Develop a clear plan to launch the innovation, ensuring necessary resources and support are in place.

By following this structured framework, organizations can enhance their innovation capabilities, reduce risks, and increase the chances of successful outcomes.

What is the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)?

The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) is an international treaty with over 155 Contracting States. It allows inventors and businesses to seek patent protection for an invention in multiple countries simultaneously by filing a single “international” patent application, rather than filing separate national or regional applications.

While the PCT streamlines the process, the granting of patents is still managed by the national or regional patent offices during what is known as the “national phase.”

6 November 1928: Jacob Schick Patents the First Electric Razor

Unless you’re partaking in No Shave November, you can thank Colonel Jacob Schick for your next trim. On November 6, 1928, Schick was issued a patent for the first electric razor, inspired by the reloading mechanism of a repeating rifle.

In 1925, Schick founded the Schick Magazine Repeating Razor Company in New York. His repeating razors were a commercial hit, and three years later, he sold his stake to the American Chain & Cable Company. With the proceeds, Schick poured all his energy and resources into launching his electric razor, which debuted in 1931. Priced at $25, the razor became a sensation, selling over a million units in just two years.

While Schick was an innovative inventor, his financial management left much to be desired. In 1935, he fled to Canada to evade taxes, renounced his U.S. citizenship, and spent the rest of his life pursued over questionable business practices.
